Can I Raise My Family in Today's World?

Since I was a little girl, and to this day, I have dreamed of having a family of my own! I wanted to raise my family on a ranch, where they could learn to work hard, experience the outdoors, have an imagination, and gain a love for God's creations! I imagined having a big family, since I come from one. I always wanted six to seven kids, with five boys and one or two girls.

These desires and wants came from being raised by good parents. I grew up in a family with six kids, me being the second to last. I have three sisters and two brothers, one of them being my twin. I have many vivid memories growing up and playing in the sandbox with my siblings, playing cowboys and Indians with the neighbor kids, and going on daily bike rides as a family.

I am not going to say I was raised perfectly, because I am by no means perfect. I'm not sure there is a perfect way to raise a child. We are all different and have different ways of learning. My siblings and I often argued, we left the house a mess, and broke mom's china glass. Though we weren't perfect and my parents weren't perfect, my parents did the best they could. I believe we were sent to our families for a reason.

I remember one day my mom and dad gathered our family for a family council. In this council, I remember my dad saying to us, "Satan is working extremely hard to tear the family apart." I remember being very scared and worried, because I loved my family. In our home we had a picture of The Family: A Proclamation to the World, and in this proclamation to the family it said, "Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities."

With the economy changing, cities becoming more dangerous, and the traditional family unit changing, it may be scary to have a desire to even get married or have a family. What about people like me who have always had a dream to have a family? Is it worth having a family now days? Can I teach my kids morals in a demoralizing world? Is there hope for the family?

The answers to all of these questions is a never-failing YES! The family is ordained of God, it always has, and always will be! Though the world is changing, God isn't and neither are His laws or His love for us! As we follow the counsel given to us through The Family: A Proclamation to the World, "Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities," that those blessings and promises are available.

Those dreams I have had about a family since I was a little girl are still intact. Though we may have some obstacles in this life, we can overcome them as we strengthen our families! There is a quote that sits on my wall that says, "The future belongs to those who BELIEVE in the beauty of their DREAMS."
